Issue 1/2025 of the journal On Child, Language and Literature will focus on the coexistence and interactions of different languages in the linguistic repertoire of the child, in education, and in a wider societal context. A comprehensive and integrated approach to languages in education (linguistic diversity, development of language competences) has been one of the recommendations of the Council of Europe in its language policy since the beginning of the new millennium (2001). As a result of current demographic changes, almost 10% (on average) of all students in the European Union are taught in a language other than their mother tongue. In the Central European area, however, this statistic only slightly exceeds 1%. The monothematic issue of the journal opens a platform for discussion on how to overcome myths and stereotypical attitudes towards the phenomena of bi/multilingualism, on ways of adopting a pluralistic approach to languages in education, and on the possibilities of accelerating the implementation of these didactic approaches in the curriculum reform, in teacher training, and in educational practice.
