Thematic Issue 2026: From Generative to Laboratory Phonology:
The Phonetics and Phonology Overlap

Guest Editor: Artur Kijak, University of Silesia

ANGLICA: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES is an open-access, annual, peer-reviewed journal in literary, cultural, and linguistic studies published both in print and online under the auspices of the Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw, Poland. The journal is indexed in SCOPUS, DOAJ, CEEOL, MLA, BazHum, EBSCO, MIAR, Index Copernicus, ERIHPLUS, Sherpa Romeo, and included in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.

The editors encourage scholars from across the academy to explore and provide their unique insight within the suggested thematic focus of the interface and overlap in phonetics and phonology.

Although phonetics and phonology have always shared general research goals of understanding the sound structure of human language, for decades they have been perceived as two separate fields of study. Recently, however, the division of the study of the speech sounds into phonetics and phonology has been called into question. In consequence, in current linguistic research, approaches that tend to consolidate the close relationship between both disciplines become dominant (Laboratory Phonology). Moreover, recent findings in psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and artificial intelligence have contributed to numerous profound insights that may further strengthen the conviction about the fertility of this integrational and interdisciplinary research method.

In this Thematic Issue (TI) of Anglica. An International Journal of English Studies, we aim to situate the current state of research on the fuzzy borderlines between phonetics and phonology in contemporary linguistics enterprise. This Thematic Issue was conceived with the idea to investigate the sound structure of natural language by means of both formal/categorical and experimental/physical methods, shedding light on the yet unsettled relation between both disciplines. This pursuit is presently carried out by prominent linguistic theories, ranging from substance-free and substance-based frameworks to Laboratory Phonology.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Synchronic and Diachronic Phonological Processes

i.e. phonological processes viewed from both diachronic and their current synchronic perspectives. This includes analyses of processes such as e.g., voicing assimilation, nasalization, palatalization, affrication, glottalization, vocalization, and others.

  • Phonotactics, Patterns, and Units of Segmental Organization

i.e. studies of phonotactic rules and preferred patterns in English and other languages, providing insight into the structural constraints governing the sequencing of segments and their effects on the intra-segmental structure and other linguistic phenomena.

  • Boundary Effects, Rhythm, and Intonational Patterns

i.e. the examination of prosodic features such as syllable prominence, foot structure, boundary effects in connected speech, and intonational and rhythmical patterns that contribute to the prosodic structure of English and other languages.

Papers should be of 6,000 to 8,000 words (maximum) and of high-quality lively writing, showing evidence of original research, which will address the propositions put forward above.

Prospective contributors are invited to send their proposals with the following information to artur.kijak@us.edu.pl and annaredzioch@uw.edu.pl by April 2025: (a) Authors’ full names, (b) a professional bio of up to 100 words, (c) professional affiliation, (d) the title of your manuscript, and (e) an abstract of your chapter (300 words max.).

The timeline for the TI is as follows:

  • Deadline for submission of abstracts: April 2025
  • Notification of acceptance/rejection of abstracts: 15 April 2025
  • Blinded manuscripts sent for external review: 31 October 2025
  • Ongoing blinded, peer-reviews: From 1 December 2025 to 15 February 2026
  • Final version of articles: Due 1 April 2026
  • Tentative publication of TI: September 2026

All papers will be double-blind peer reviewed. Submitted papers should be original and not under consideration or published elsewhere, and should be formatted according to the guidelines provided in our style sheet.

Important note: Acceptance of the abstract and full paper does not ensure acceptance/publication of the manuscript. The final decision rests on the peer reviewers and the journal editors.
